Words by Amanda Jacobson

2013 was a massive year for fashion with lawsuits and protests, all the way to comebacks and debuts. Let’s just say that 2013 was not a boring year…

January

The year kicked off with a new law that banned models with a body mass index level below 18.5 from the runway, photo shoots and advertising campaigns in Israel.

A few weeks later, Karl Lagerfeld used the finale of his Chanel haute couture show in Paris to show his support for Gay Marriage. Lagerfeld’s four-year-old godson, Hudson Kroening, closed the show alongside two female models in long white gowns and trains which swept into Paris’s vast Grand Palace.

February

February was a time of anticipation and the moment everyone in the fashion community was waiting for; the debut of Alexander Wang’s first collection for Balenciaga. There were mixed feelings all around and many felt as if it didn’t measure up to Nicolas Ghesquière’s previous work.

March

In March, Gucci’s creative director gave birth to her first child, and Kate Moss took to the runway at Louis Vuitton on the last day of Paris fashion week, cheered on by supporters. It was extremely reminiscent of a sporting match as the British model stepped out of Marc Jacob’s hotel-inspired set wearing a short wig.

April

In April, Victor & Rolf returned to the Paris haute couture schedule which excited many fans as they spent more than a decade away. Also, rumours circulated about John Galliano planning on taking up a teaching position at the famous Parsons Design School in New York.

May

McQueen fans from around the world were thrilled in May due to a new website that was made which now expands shipping to nearly 100 countries. The London-based fashion label now reaches countries in Asia, Russia, South/Central/North America, and Australia. as well as additional countries in Europe.

A little later in the month, Karl Lagerfeld found inspiration within Rome. The creative director of Italian luxury label Fendi is making an exhibition of photographs featuring some of Rome’s most stunning Fountains.

June

Luxury fashion house, Burberry, and the internet giant, Google, have collaborated to create a new interactive project. This new innovation is for Google Chrome and mobile users, and is a little fashion treat, which sends a digital kiss anywhere in the world. Be sure to check it out here: http://kisses.burberry.com/

This month was also when Kate Moss stripped for Versace in the Italian luxury brand's new campaign for FW '13. She was shot by Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott. And let’s just say she looked hot!

July

Abbey Lee fans were in for a treat this month with her official comeback to the fashion world. She left the runway to focus on her acting and singing career but came back for the Fall 2013 Gucci campaign photographed by Mert & Marcus. Her fans were not disappointed and loved the dark black hair. So what’s next for the Aussie model?

August

Sasha Pivovarova, fashion's Russian royalty, became the face and ambassador for the latest elixir by Lolita Lempicka: “Elle L’aime”. The new fragrance is currently available now.

September

September was a month of controversy and utter drama in the fashion world. Balenciaga took Nicolas Ghesquière to court because of negative remarks he made about their former employer.

Later in the month, the Ukrainian feminist group called FEMEN somehow got past security at Nina Ricci and protested on the runway—topless. No one is really sure on what they were actually protesting about. The women had slogans like "models don't go to brothels" and "fashion dictaterror" written on their chests. A model by the name of Hollie-May Saker had her hand grabbed by one of the protestors but somehow managed to keep walking. The fashion community called this ‘Fashion Judo.’

October
October was a month of splits and departures. Marc Jacobs left Louis Vuitton after being creative director for 16 years. It was said to be one of the biggest moves by someone in the fashion community. Also, Jil Sanders leaves her brand for the third time. But who’s counting?

November

Triumphant is a word that could describe November in 2013; a new underage model law was passed and became effective on the 20th of this month. It will ensure the following:
  1. A responsible person will be designated to monitor the activity and safety for each child performer under the age of 16 in the workplace.
  2. Employers must provide a nurse with paediatric experience as well as health and safety information.
  3. An education requirement decrees that employers must provide teachers and a dedicated space for instruction.
  4. A financial trust must be established by a child model's parent or guardian into whom an employer must transfer at least 15 percent of the child's gross earnings.

December

For this month’s issue of Vogue UK, Kate Moss is the cover girl who stars in a guest shoot styled by John Galliano. This shoot is extremely special as Moss has stood by Galliano’s side since his anti-Semitism scandal two years ago. The shoot which is entitled “Fantasia” has a 1920s vibe and is inspired by the Ballets Russes.

It may have been a big year, but 2014 is sure to go off with a bang. Be sure to stick around as we bring you all the latest fashion news.
